"Memphis is in the early stage of a dramatic change. The change will not just be noticed in new buildings and businesses, but in the people who live here. Hispanics continue to represent a growing demographic in the nation and account for 7 percent of Memphis' population, according to the 2017 American Community Survey's 5-year estimates. Our pick for this seat, Mauricio Calvo, is an established voice not just for that community but for the future of all Memphians. He will offer a needed perspective on a Council that needs to represent all of Memphis. ...
The CA is endorsing in each of the council races, but it was not an easy task. Strong candidates abound in the races, including several educators, community activists, entrepreneurs, civic leaders, a family physician, a real-estate developer and a pastor. They are passionate about making Memphis a stronger, more welcoming and equitable city. They also want to use the council platform to address generational poverty, opportunity youths and draw attention to causes they support."
